How to get to Lake Garda: a guide for those who want a stress-free trip

From Verona airport to your hotel door: a practical comparison of every way to reach Lake Garda, with real distances, journey times and prices.

How to get to Lake Garda: a guide for those who want a stress-free trip

Lake Garda is served by six airports across northern Italy, plus train connections and bus routes. The right choice depends on where you're flying from, how many people are travelling, and what kind of arrival experience you want: budget-conscious and independent, or smooth and door-to-door from the moment you land. This guide compares every option with real data so you can decide before you book.

Airports closest to Lake Garda

Lake Garda sits at the meeting point of Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige — well positioned between six international airports. Choosing the right one affects both your flight cost and how long you spend getting to the lake:

  • Verona Catullo (VRN) — ~30 km, 20–40 min by car or private transfer

  • Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) — ~85 km, 45–60 min

  • Milan Linate (LIN) — ~120 km, ~90 min

  • Milan Malpensa (MXP) — ~150 km, ~100 min

  • Venice Marco Polo (VCE) — ~160 km, ~120 min

  • Bologna Marconi (BLQ) — ~200 km, ~120 min

Verona is the most convenient: you can reach Peschiera, Desenzano or Sirmione in under forty minutes. Bergamo is the main hub for Ryanair and easyJet flights from across Europe — about an hour's drive from the southern shore.

Desenzano del Garda

By train: the right choice for specific itineraries

The train works well if your destination sits near one of the lake's two main stations. Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda both lie on the Milan–Venice high-speed line, served by Frecciarossa and Intercity trains with roughly 35 departures a day. From Verona Porta Nuova, Desenzano takes 19–23 minutes, Peschiera 12–16 minutes, with tickets from €8.90.

The limits show up immediately after arrival. Sirmione has no train station — you need another form of transport from Desenzano station. The same applies to all the western shore villages: Gardone Riviera, Salò, Limone sul Garda — none are on the rail network. With large luggage, children, or in high season when trains are crowded, the station-to-hotel leg can be the most exhausting part of the journey.

Travellers flying into Verona also need to add the Airlink shuttle (every 20 minutes) to reach Verona Porta Nuova station before boarding the train. The savings are real — the logistics have a cost of their own.

By car or hire car: flexibility with a few catches

Driving gives you freedom once you're at the lake, but travellers unfamiliar with the area run into a few complications quickly.

Sirmione is the main one. The historic centre is protected by a Zona a Traffico Limitato — a restricted traffic zone — active 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no free-access windows. Private vehicles without a permit cannot enter, even to drop off luggage. Cars must stop in external car parks roughly 500 metres from the castle, costing up to €26 per day in high season.

In Desenzano, pay-and-display parking covers most of the lakefront at up to €2 per hour, active every day including public holidays from April to October.

In summer, traffic along the lake shores can stretch journey times unpredictably — particularly on Friday evenings and July and August weekends. Arriving tired after a long flight and then queuing in traffic with a full boot is not the start to the holiday most people picture.

By bus: cheapest option, least practical with luggage

The ATV line 482 runs directly from Verona airport to Peschiera del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino and Garda, with hourly departures. From Verona city, lines 163, 164 and 185 cover the same route. It is the least expensive option.

With normal luggage, children, or in peak season, the bus becomes uncomfortable. Routes end at bus stops: from there you still need to reach your hotel.

Private NCC transfer: for those who want to arrive, not just get there

An NCCnoleggio con conducente, Italy's licensed private hire service — is booked in advance with a fixed price and premium vehicles. Unlike a taxi, the fare is agreed before departure and covers everything: motorway tolls, fuel, ZTL access and one hour of free waiting at the airport if your flight is delayed.

Your driver monitors the flight in real time and adjusts the pickup time without you needing to do anything. At arrivals, he meets you with a personalised name board, takes your bags to the vehicle, and drives you door to door to your hotel, villa or apartment — including Sirmione historic centre, where NCC vehicles have authorised access to the restricted zone for passenger drop-off.

BookTaxi rates start from €90 from Verona airport, all inclusive. For two or more travellers, the gap compared to the train narrows as soon as you factor in the local taxi from the station. For groups of four to eight, the private transfer is often the most economical choice too.

Vehicles are Mercedes with on-board Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Child seats and a small-pet carrier are available on request.

The train is the right choice for solo travellers or couples travelling light who arrive directly at Desenzano or Peschiera. A hire car makes sense if you plan to move around the lake frequently and know the area. A private NCC transfer is the solution for anyone who wants the holiday to begin the moment they step into the vehicle.
