All about Arena di Verona and its Opera Festival. Tips on how to organize your visit departing from Lake Garda: distances, transport options, and practical tips for a smooth late-night return.

Arena di Verona: full guide and how to get there from Lake Garda

The Arena di Verona is one of the most famous open-air stages in the world, and attending a performance during the summer festival is an experience worth the journey. From Lake Garda the distance is manageable - Peschiera del Garda is just 30 km away, Desenzano and Sirmione around 43-44 km. The real challenge is the late-night return: performances often end after midnight, trains become scarce, and taxis outside the Arena run out within minutes. This guide covers all available options and helps you choose the right one depending on where you are staying.

The Arena di Verona: history and facts about a unique amphitheatre

Roman origins and two thousand years of history

The Arena di Verona is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. Built around the first half of the 1st century AD, during the Julio-Claudian period, it was designed as a public venue for gladiatorial contests, venationes (animal hunts), and mass entertainment. In Roman times it could hold around 30,000 spectators; today, with the stage occupying part of the cavea, capacity for summer performances sits at around 22,000 seats. It is the third largest amphitheatre by size in ancient Italy, after the Colosseum in Rome and the Arena di Capua.

Its transformation into an opera venue began in 1913, when tenor Giovanni Zenatello and manager Carlo Ottone organised the first performance of Verdi's Aida to celebrate the centenary of the composer's birth. Since then the Arena has never stopped hosting opera: more than a century of summer festivals, with limestone terraces as the stalls and the Verona sky as the ceiling. The site is part of Verona's historic centre, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The 2026 Arena Opera Festival programme

The 103rd edition of the Arena Opera Festival runs from 12 June to 12 September 2026. The programme includes some of the most celebrated works in the international operatic repertoire:

  • La Traviata - in a new production by Paul Curran, bringing the Moulin Rouge to the Arena's terraces for the first time

  • Aida - in two versions: the historic Zeffirelli production and a new staging by Stefano Poda with light effects and transparent scenery

  • La Bohème - directed by Alfonso Signorini

  • Turandot - in the Zeffirelli production, marking the centenary of the opera's world premiere (1926)

  • Nabucco

The full programme, individual performance dates, and cast lists are on the official website arena.it.

Tickets: prices and where to buy

The Arena offers several seating categories, with prices varying considerably:

  • Poltronissime (stalls seating near the stage): the premium categories, with indicative prices between 100 and 300 euros depending on sector (platinum, gold, silver)

  • Green, Puccini, Rossini sectors (first two rows of numbered terraces with seats): approximately 65 to 180 euros

  • Numbered terraces (4th, 5th, 6th sectors, bare stone without backrests): approximately 28 to 70 euros

  • Under 30: through UniCredit, selected stalls tickets at 30 euros (excluding premieres and Saturday performances, subject to availability)

Tickets are available on the official website arena.it, at the box offices on Piazza Bra, or through authorised resellers. For peak performances - premieres, Aida, evenings in July and August - early booking is strongly recommended.

Before the performance: what to know

  • Gates open: generally 1 hour 30 minutes before curtain up. To find your seats comfortably, especially on the terraces, arrive at least 30-40 minutes early

  • Dress code: there is no formal requirement. Smart casual is the standard: many audience members dress for the occasion, but jeans and comfortable shoes are accepted - especially on the terraces, where you sit on stone

  • Temperature: June and July evenings are warm, but the stone terraces cool down after midnight. Always bring a light layer, especially from August onwards

  • Photography: permitted before the performance. Flash is not allowed during the show

  • Cushions: available to hire at the Arena for terrace seating

  • Rain: performances are suspended only in heavy rain. Check arena.it in the hours before your evening

Performances begin at 21:00 in June and July, at 20:30 from August onwards. Including one or two intervals, most productions run between three and four hours: the curtain falls somewhere between midnight and 1am. Arrange your return transport before buying tickets - this window rules out most public transport options.

Distances from Lake Garda to the Arena di Verona

The Arena is on Piazza Bra, in the heart of Verona's UNESCO-listed historic centre. Driving distances from the main Lake Garda towns:

  • Peschiera del Garda - Verona: approx. 30 km, 25-35 minutes via A4

  • Sirmione - Verona: approx. 43 km, 35-45 minutes via A4

  • Desenzano del Garda - Verona: approx. 44 km, 35-50 minutes via A4

  • Salò and Gardone Riviera - Verona: approx. 60-65 km, 50-60 minutes

  • Limone sul Garda - Verona: approx. 85 km, 70-80 minutes

The route from the southern shore follows the A4 in the direction Milan-Venice, exiting at Verona Sud or Verona Est. Traffic outbound is generally clear in the late afternoon. The return, in the small hours, is usually free-flowing - the issue is not traffic but finding a way home.

How to get to the Arena di Verona from Lake Garda

By train

The train is the fastest public transport option from the eastern shore. From Peschiera del Garda, the direct connection to Verona Porta Nuova takes around 12-15 minutes; from Desenzano del Garda - Sirmione, around 30-35 minutes. Trenitalia tickets start from about 4 euros.

The problem is the return: the last useful trains from Verona Porta Nuova towards Lake Garda depart before midnight, too early for the end of any Arena performance. Check updated timetables on trenitalia.com before relying on the train, and have a backup plan for the return.

OperaBus ATV

During the festival season, ATV - Verona's public transport operator - runs a dedicated service called OperaBus. The bus departs from Piazza Cittadella (a few minutes' walk from Piazza Bra) around 30 minutes after the end of each performance, and booking in advance is compulsory.

Stops served include: Castelnuovo del Garda, Peschiera del Garda, Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Torri del Benaco, and Malcesine. The service therefore covers the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Guests staying in Desenzano, Sirmione, Salò, Gardone Riviera, or Limone sul Garda are not served by the OperaBus and need an alternative.

Own car

Driving is theoretically possible but comes with several practical complications. The historic centre of Verona - including the area around Piazza Bra - falls within a Zona Traffico Limitato. ZTL cameras operate 24 hours a day and fines for unauthorised access range from 80 to 300 euros. The nearest car parks (Piazza Cittadella, Arena Parking) fill up early on busy evenings; peripheral free parking such as Porta Palio can already be full by late afternoon. And after three or four hours of performance ending close to 1am, driving home is less pleasant - and if wine or aperitifs were part of the evening, the car is simply not an option.

Private transfer with driver (NCC)

A private transfer to Verona with BookTaxi Desenzano takes care of the three main logistical issues of the evening: ZTL access, an uncertain return time, and the late-night wait on Piazza Bra. Your driver picks you up from your hotel, takes you to the Arena entrance, and meets you at the agreed pick-up point when the performance ends - whatever time that may be.

The rate is fixed: motorway tolls, fuel, and ZTL access are included with no extras at the end. Vehicles seat up to 8 with free WiFi and air conditioning. To book or request a quote, call or WhatsApp +39 320 444 3000.

Why a private NCC transfer is the most practical choice for an opera evening

The best option depends partly on where you are staying. Guests on the eastern shore - Peschiera, Lazise, Bardolino - can consider the train going in and the ATV OperaBus returning, if the stops match their accommodation. For everyone else - southern shore, western shore, and the upper eastern shore - a private transfer is the only option that guarantees a stress-free return.

Three concrete advantages over the alternatives:

  • ZTL handled: an NCC driver holds the permits required to access Verona's restricted zone. No cameras, no fines, no car park stress

  • Flexible timing: the night transfer service operates 24/7, 365 days a year. The return adapts to the actual curtain-down time

  • Cost-effective for groups: a van for 6-8 passengers lets you split the fixed fare across everyone. For three or more people, the per-person cost often works out lower than separate train and taxi tickets

How to plan your evening step by step

A practical timeline starting from Desenzano or Sirmione:

  • 17:30-18:00: depart from your hotel. With 40-50 minutes of driving, you arrive in Verona with plenty of time

  • 18:30-19:30: aperitivo and dinner in the old town, around Piazza Erbe or Via Mazzini

  • 20:15-20:30: enter the Arena and find your seats without rushing

  • 21:00: performance begins

  • 00:00-01:00: performance ends. Your driver is already at the agreed meeting point

  • 00:45-01:30: return to Lake Garda
